About the Client:
A consumer technology company develops billing and invoicing software that simplifies the process of storing transaction data in a centralized location. It offers e-bills and payment tracking solutions for businesses, enabling them to efficiently manage their billing services for customers. Additionally, it is designed for consumers, allowing users to track their monthly expenses and discover loyalty offers from their favorite brands based on their spending at various stores.
A consumer technology company aimed to optimize its AWS infrastructure by ensuring high availability, proactive monitoring, performance optimization, security, and cost efficiency. With security as a top priority, they focused on data protection, threat prevention, and compliance. Comprinno implemented continuous monitoring, automated threat detection, and robust identity and access management while adhering to AWS best practices for security. They secured data with encryption for both at rest and in transit, reinforced network security with firewalls, and enforced strict access controls to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, observability was set up to monitor and optimize infrastructure performance, ensuring system reliability and efficiency. Cost optimization strategies were also implemented to manage cloud spending effectively without compromising performance or security.
Infrastructure Architecture Overview
Comprinno implemented continuous monitoring, automated threat detection, and robust identity and access management. It consists of both public and private subnets, ensuring a secure and scalable infrastructure. The public subnets are designated for external-facing resources, while the private subnets host Kubernetes workloads, including Amazon EKS clusters and Amazon Aurora databases for high availability and performance. The system is protected by AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF) and utilizes an Application Load Balancer (ALB) to manage traffic efficiently. Various AWS services such as S3, Lambda, and networking components are integrated for enhanced functionality. The design prioritizes security, high availability, and cost optimization, leveraging AWS best practices. This architecture is suitable for organizations running containerized applications with managed Kubernetes services.

The architecture diagram below depicts the security services enabled for consumer technology company to ensure a robust security posture across the infrastructure.

AWS IAM Identity Center is implemented for centralized authentication and access management, enabling users to log in using corporate credentials from Active Directory or other identity providers. AWS IAM is utilized to govern permissions and access control by defining policies and roles for users, applications, and services. To facilitate secure resource sharing across AWS accounts, AWS Resource Access Manager (AWS RAM) is used to allow controlled access to AWS resources, ensuring that users and services only interact with authorized resources while maintaining security and compliance.
Amazon CloudFront is utilized as a global content delivery network (CDN) to accelerate the delivery of web content and reduce latency, ensuring that users experience fast load times regardless of their location. To manage domain names and route traffic efficiently, Amazon Route 53 is implemented, providing highly available and scalable DNS services that direct users to the correct endpoints. Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) is utilized to distribute incoming application traffic across multiple targets, such as EC2 instances, improving both application availability and fault tolerance. Amazon API Gateway is implemented to manage and secure API traffic, enabling developers to easily create, deploy, and monitor APIs while ensuring that backend services can communicate seamlessly. To safeguard the applications from common web exploits, AWS WAF is used to protect against attacks like SQL injection and cross-site scripting (XSS). Amazon VPC is utilized to isolate and secure the network infrastructure, enabling the creation of private, logically separated environments where traffic can be tightly controlled.
AWS Config is used to continuously monitor the configuration of AWS resources, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and detecting any unauthorized changes in real-time. To track and log API calls for detailed auditing, AWS CloudTrail is implemented, providing a comprehensive record of all actions taken within the AWS environment, which is crucial for forensic investigations. To detect and respond to potential security threats, Amazon GuardDuty is deployed, offering intelligent threat detection by analyzing network traffic and CloudTrail logs to identify malicious activity. Amazon Inspector is utilized to automatically assess applications for vulnerabilities or deviations from best practices, helping to identify and remediate potential security issues. For centralized security management and to aggregate findings from multiple services, AWS Security Hub is implemented, providing a unified view of security alerts and helping prioritize issues for quick response. Amazon CloudWatch is used to monitor the operational health of the infrastructure in real-time, generating metrics and setting up alarms for any performance anomalies. AWS X-Ray is utilized to trace the flow of requests through the application, providing deep insights into performance bottlenecks and issues that could affect the user experience.
AWS CloudFormation is implemented to automate the provisioning and configuration of AWS resources, ensuring consistent and repeatable infrastructure deployment. AWS KMS is used to create and manage encryption keys, securing sensitive data at rest and during processing while restricting access to authorized entities. AWS Certificate Manager is deployed to provision and manage SSL/TLS certificates, enabling encrypted communication between users and applications. AWS Organizations is implemented to centralize the management of multiple AWS accounts, streamlining security enforcement, compliance, and billing. AWS Secrets Manager is used to securely store and retrieve sensitive application secrets, such as API keys and database credentials, preventing exposure in code or configuration files.
Tevico, a cloud governance platform developed and owned by Comprinno, is used for security management, inventory tracking, and other critical aspects of AWS governance. Standard and advanced security assessment reports can be generated to provide an overall view of the security posture. These reports provide the security findings and their actionable recommended remediations. The security assessment reports can be downloaded on-demand by the customers. Apart from the security assessment reports, Tevico also provided detailed GuardDuty findings, which helped the consumer technology company detect and mitigate potential threats, unauthorized access, and suspicious activities, enhancing overall cloud security. WAF Analysis helped the company secure its web applications by identifying misconfigurations and preventing attacks like SQL injections and cross-site scripting. The Access Summary feature helped the consumer technology company review IAM permissions, enforce the principle of least privilege, and eliminate excessive permissions. Access Analyzer findings helped the consumer technology company identify and prevent unintended access to sensitive AWS resources, reducing security risks. Additionally, Code Scan Analysis helped the consumer technology company inspect Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates, such as AWS CloudFormation and Terraform, for misconfigurations before deployment, ensuring secure and compliant cloud automation. These capabilities collectively helped the consumer technology company strengthen its AWS security, streamline operations, mitigate risks, and ensure continuous compliance.
By integrating the data protection AWS services, sensitive data is encrypted both in transit and at rest, ensuring protection against unauthorized access and maintaining the integrity of communication and storage.
By integrating detection and responsive AWS services, the organization gains comprehensive visibility into its infrastructure, enabling real-time monitoring and detection of configuration changes.
By integrating networking and security AWS services, organizations can ensure enhanced performance, reliability, and protection for their web applications. These tools work together to accelerate content delivery, reducing latency and improving user experience.
Implementing AWS IAM Identity Center, AWS Cognito, AWS IAM, and AWS RAM identity and access management is centralized, allowing for streamlined authentication, secure sign-ins, and precise permission control. This ensures that only authorized users and services can access resources, enhancing overall security and compliance.
